    Relative & Absolute Paste

    Hi All,

    Firstly apologies if the title of this post is confusing, nonsensical or anything else that results in confusion! I simply know of no other way to describe what I’m sure is a simple solution (if indeed it can be done in Excel).

    So here’s a simple scenario; 5 cells in a row, three of which have some text in and each separated with a blank cell thus:-

    A1=”some text”, B1 = BLANK, C1 = =”some text”, D1 = BLANK, E1 = =”some text”

    I want to copy cells A1 through to E1 into row 2 so that I get

    A2=”some text”, B2 = BLANK, C2 = =”some text”, D2 = BLANK, E2 = =”some text”

    But what I obviously get is

    A2 =”some text”, B2 = ”some text”, C2 =”some text”

    It’s the first time I've had to try this scenario and after some hunting around on Google, I cannot find a method, if one exists, to achieve what I want. I suspect I’m either phrasing the question to Google incorrectly or it cannot be done. Can anyone help please?
    Many thanks in advance.

    Re: Relative & Absolute Paste

    I've not come across that behaviour before. You should highlight the cells A1 to E1, click <copy>, then move the cursor to A2 and press <Enter>, and you should get whatever is in cells A1:E1 copied into the corresponding cells of A2:E2.

    Hope this helps.

    Pete

    Thanks Pete,
    I would have expected Excel to do exactly what you've described but alas, no, it's gone all uber-weird on me. I've created a brand new file and tried to replicate the action but more uber-weirdness. I'll try an install-repair on Excel.

    Update - uber-weirdness cured by an Excel repair!
