Gantt chart incells

Hi All,
I'm not sure I understand why i cannot get a function working.
I'm building a resource plan so we can see who's spending time on what dates. See attached file.

I just need to count the number of time a person appears within a date range. I've tried three functions to no avail. See "desired Result" section on the spreadsheet.
