No Paste Special Option with Cut

I must have missed something obvious because I have been wasting my time for many years in this way .....

    I copy a cell(s)
    I Paste Special Values
I go back to the source cells and delete them.

Obvious option is to CUT cell(s)
BUT - there is then no Paste Special option.

What am I missing that must be obvious to others? I find very few questions re this problem asked of Uncle Google.

I am now using Excel 2010 in Win8.1, but wasted time for years special pasting and then deleting in Excel 2000/2003 in XP. It is time to find the answer eventually.

What paste special option do you need?

Re: No Paste Special Option with Cut

Hey AliGW - that was quick!

I want to paste values only. I do not want to destroy the rather complex formatting of the destination cells. I wish pasting values was the default - it is the paste option I use 90% of the time - my fingers know the Alt-E-S-V shortcut without me even thinking about it.

Then you will have to continue using the method you are used to.

Do you know if there is a reason for this? What could prevent that option being possible?

No reason other than what Microsoft decided should happen. Might be worth trawling the MS forums and see if it's on the wishlist for improvements.

Mmmm - Microsoft and their decrees based on what they think is good for us!! I am surprised that this is not a problem for more users.

    Thanks anyway.

Re: No Paste Special Option with Cut

When you Cut data you remove the original data and when you Paste it, you will ALWAYS be pasting in all attributes of the cell you Cut from. This means that the Paste Special option is not available when you Cut a cell or range of cells.

Yes, that is true, but it's not necessarily convenient at all times. There should be no real difference between data cut to the clipboard or copied, so there should be no real difference when pasting it, either. Anyway, it's not an issue that can be resolved without lobbying Microsoft!

Thanks Fotis - with sw anything is possible. Or should be.

Have just checked OPenOffice and KingsoftOffice - neither can do the cut-paste special, so I have to accept that this must not be a trivial exercise to implement.

Thanks for the advice re reputation star.

Glad I am not the only one who sees the sense of cut - paste special.

Time to get on with some real work now - Cheers

Re: No Paste Special Option with Cut

Perhaps still on this topic .... and while I am getting such quick response.

After a cut or paste, the source cells have a flashing dashed line around them. Ignoring it and carrying on working stops it.

BUT - what is it for? Could it be for an easy way for me to go back to it to delete the copied source cells?

(I have noticed that while it is flashing, I can continue to copy the source cells many times over. Having pressed ESC to stop the flashing, the source cell data is no longer available.)

Re: No Paste Special Option with Cut

In theory, they seem to mean that the cells are still selected, but in practice it is indicating that their data is still held on the clipboard, so you can paste the data multiple times.

This is still a two-stage operation, so it doesn't really help at all. The OP was looking for a one-stage solution.

    What is an OP?

BTW - I am often amazed at how often posts are not read thoroughly and trivial, obvious answers are given to non-trivial questions. So thanks for your thorough answers. :-)

    Thanks
"Thanks" is too short a response according to the forum rules. So - this should be long enough ;-)

Re: No Paste Special Option with Cut

OK - I now have a solution. I tried to write a VBA macro and with help from the MrExcel VBA forum, have something that works.

Create a macro and in VBA insert this script. Ctrl-q calls the macro in my case.

    Procedure:
Select the text to be CUT
    Run the macro - Ctrl-q
Point to where you want the values to be copied to.
Enter or click OK in the message box.
    DONE.
The source text is now cut. 2 step but quicker than returning to the source text and deleting it as is required in standard copy paste values.

    Thanks for the help.

It's now 9 years since this big UX problem was discussed by you in 2013.

Today, in 2022, we still have this in Microsoft Excel 365. I run onto it several times a day. When I hit the 10th time today before noon now I decided to Google a bit if it can be fixed in Settings, by modifying Registry key or something. But nooo.

THIS IS ANNOYING WASTE OF TIME.

    BAD, BAD UX.

We should be able to choose whether to enable this protection, which can be useful to some, and truly a problem for others.

HELLO MICROSOFT? Please add an option to settings: "Use Paste Special on Cut & Paste".

Re: No Paste Special Option with Cut

There is no link between ExcelForum and Microsoft - there's no point complaining here. Please address your annoyance on one of Microsoft's platforms.

    Thank you.
