    Question Can't insert copied cells.

    Good day,

I've noticed that if I copy a number of rows e.g rows 5-15 and I try to insert them before any of the rows 6-14, I can't. Rather, I get the error message

    This selection is not valid.
    There are several possible reasons:

Copy and paste areas cannot overlap unless they're the same size and shape.
If you are using the Create from Selection command, the row or column containing the proposed names will not be included in the definitions of the names.
If the names you are creating are listed in a row or column, you must select more than one row or column.
If you clicked the Data Table command, you must select a single rectangle that is more than one row high and more than one column wide.

Since I'm not pasting, I don't understand why I'm getting this error. Can someone please explain? Thanks

I did but there aren't any merged cells in that range.

unless we can see the excel file, it is hard to come up with a solution. is it possible you post it (remove any confidential data in it before uploading it to this forum)

    Re: Can't insert copied cells.

Surely if you copy "rows 5-15" and "try to insert them before any of the rows 6-14" then the areas are overlapping hence the error?

Ensure you describe your problem clearly, I have little time available to solve these problems and do not appreciate numerous changes to them.

    Re: Can't insert copied cells.

Everything in the file is confidential unfortunately but this problem comes up in any file I try to do the same operation. For instance, I opened a new file and filled in column A from row 1 to row 20 with numbers, copied rows 2-19 and tried to insert between rows 10 and 11. I still received the same error.

Funnily enough, pasting does not give an error. I just don't get how inserting equates to overlapping.

check Special-K's answer, he is right.
When you paste, you overwrite the existing rows. When inserting, the range to be inserted is overlapping the range where to be inserted.

    Re: Can't insert copied cells.

First convert your copied range to a table, use the "Format as Table" option in the Home tab. If it's already a Table, then select the entire table and convert to a range. Either way, transform your source data to remove the overlaps. Now select the copied data, copy and insert them into your destination table/range
    YAwn, is today over yet?

It's happened to me a few times, in every occasion it's because I accidentally grouped two tabs together, if I ungroup the tabs it goes away

Johnels this question is over 9 years old and was answered in post #7. Also I tried this with grouped tabs and did not get an error. Please direct your efforts to current threads.
