    HELP PLEASE on Auto-Adjusting Reference

    Hello everyone!

I have this problem with this specific file I have. Everything else is good and working except this one. I have 17 different files which are somewhat linked all together using their references respectively. Except this one file.

    Case:

These set of files are to be used by multiple computers. All sheets are working properly except that there's this workbook I have that prompts me every time I transfer the folder which contains all these files in a different computer. The prompt asks me to EDIT LINKS which means it does not recognize the link/reference the cells it should address to.

    pic1.jpg

    Issue:

The issue is subjective to this file only. All other files are auto adjusting by itself when I transfer to other computers. The references of these files are under the condition that the folder must be transferred to the desktop of the computer of which it should be given to.

The references where it says (as an example):

Please Login or Register to view this content.
where the PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE is the name of the user of the computer. If I use my computer at home, it automatically changes to WEDZMER.

Please Login or Register to view this content.
However, in one file, it doesn't do that.

    Problem:

What should I do in order for this file to STOP PROMPTING ME TO EDIT LINKS and automatically generate to the USERNAME of that computer it would be open to?

    Hi Sixthsense!

    Thank you for your response...

But is there any other way where I don't need to do that? Because the other files I have doesn't encounter such problem.

The formula automatically changes/adopts the username of the desktop it is transferred to. I don't know why this file I made (which is a new one) would not change at all when I transfer the files in the desktop.

What happens if you open the source file and see whether the links are getting changed automatically?

Re: HELP PLEASE on Auto-Adjusting Reference

here are the three files which I am working at currently. The problem occurs in the (1) June - Masterlist file, while the others are working fine. I put these three files inside a folder, then put the folder on the computer in our school when I will be updating any part of it, but the problem is, this June file prompts me that I need to "EDIT LINKS" every time I transfer from one computer to another, whereas the School Form 2014 doesn't. Though both files are linked on a certain file in one way or another.

    (1) June - Master List.xlsx
    School Forms 2014.xlsm
    MY SF1.xls

The School Form 2014 is linked to the MY SF1 file.. but it doesn't ask me to EDIT LINKS, which is very good!
Whereas the (1) June - Masterlist is linked the SF3 worksheet located inside the School Form 2014. And it always asks me to EDIT LINKS every time I transfer from another computer.

I don't want that prompt to bug me every time I do so, and edit links always.

    /ps/
Winon of this site was the one who helped me encoded the vba/macros for School Form 2014. All thanks to him!

My first (and probably only suggestion): Do the files have to be stored on "user's" desktop? As you note, each user's desktop has a unique path. I would suggest storing the source files in one of the public folders, which should have the same path for all users.

Re: HELP PLEASE on Auto-Adjusting Reference

    Hello MrShorty!

    Thank you for responding!

These three files are stored inside a Folder which I transfer to my flash drive every time I go to work and continue working there and transfer that folder on the desktop of that computer. My colleague also uses the same file during his duty so he again uses the flash drive and transfers it to his desktop of his computer.

I basically thought (or assumed) that if you save the folder on the desktop, it wouldn't encounter such problem. But it does.

I am really sorry, my knowledge on saving/storing excel files are not as accurate as it is. I'm really new with excels. So I really don't know what you exactly mean on "public folders". I thought that transferring the files on desktops would be effective in the referencing of the cell links in the (1) June - Masterlist file.

I do not know when MS introduced it, but I think it was about Windows XP where MS created a "public documents" folder. In Windows 7, which I currently use, if I navigate to the documents folder, there are two choices -- my documents and public documents. I believe that MS created this public documents folder for this sort of thing -- a folder to store files that all users of the computer can use.

    I see...
But my biggest intrigue is how come my School Forms 2014 file doesn't encounter such problem. It automatically adjusts by itself to what username the desktop is registered on?

Re: HELP PLEASE on Auto-Adjusting Reference

I can see the difference, but I don't really understand it. I expect it is some minor detail that is overlooked at the time the spreadsheets are created or the links are created. A difference in the where the files are saved at the point of creation, or something like that that causes Excel to store the path to each link differently.

Same suggestion -- make sure these "shared" files are stored in some kind of public or shared directory where the path to it will always be the same. That way, as files are updated and created, they will eventually all end up pointing to the same location for the source files, and you will get fewer files with this kind of error.

Re: HELP PLEASE on Auto-Adjusting Reference

Instead of storing the file in 'C:\Users\Wedzmer\Desktop\ try storing the file in C:\Users\Public\Public Desktop\ or C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\
