    Imported dates confusing me

    Hello,

I have imported a spreadsheet that has dates formated as Jan '96 and they came in the General format. What I am attempting to do is to convert the cell to a date field with the format of MMMM-YYYY and sort that date field by year first and then month. I have read various posts and Googled it to death but I can't seem to figure it out. Can anyone help me work this out? I have included a sample file which may help.

    Many thanks,

    Cliff

    In K3 enter =DATEVALUE(LEFT(A3,3)&" 01, "&YEAR("01/01/"&RIGHT(A3,2))) then sort by column K

Hi CSpicer, welcome to the forum.

Try this formula in L3 and fill down as many rows as needed. You can then copy/pastespecial the values on top of those in column A.

    =DATEVALUE(SUBSTITUTE(A3,"'",""))

    Re: Imported dates confusing me

Hello and thank you Paul. I have tried your suggestion and it returns a number that when formatted for date gives me many incorrect years for some of the fields. For example, the fields for 2013 and many others become 2014 fields. Wonder if you may try to do what you suggested on my sample file so you can see what I see?

    Many thanks again,

    Cliff
