automatically changes what i input to date format?

hi guys, hoping someone can help, i want part of my spreadsheet to contain information that for example looks like this 9-5 (or even 9/5 would be acceptable) however every time i put that in it automatically changes it to 09-may which is not what i want. i have tried going into the more accountancy formats section but cant seem to find any formats that will change it to how i want it, just wondering is there another way i can do this or am i stuck with it? im sure there is a way, probably a fairly obvious one that i am completely missing the point of, anyway.. any help greatly appreciated, thanks in advance
