Remove many unwanted/duplicated styles

Hello,

I have a spreadsheet that I copied a worksheet into, and the worksheet has some issue with hundreds of styles (see attached.) In a previous workbook I had to redo the whole thing because of the "too many styles error". How do I remove the styles? I searched on Google but none of the solutions seemed to work well for me or I need to download and install software to do so.

My constraints are:

1) I can't install any software other than Excel add-ins since its a work computer and locked down. If there is a killer solution that uses an app I suppose I could run it quickly on my home pc and transfer back but trying to avoid if possible.
2) I can't just delete all the styles and start fresh. It was a tremendous amount of work to style all the worksheets. I would love something that deletes both unused and duplicated.

Thanks so much.

Not sure if this will cause you more work, but it should remove ALL formatting/styles.

Left-click in the small square abobe row 1 and to the left of column A
On the Home Tab/Editing/Clear/Clear Formats
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools

Thanks Ford - though as I mentioned in point 2, I can't do that unfortunately. It would me a ridiculous amount of rework. A shame that all these styles get copied over - quite an inconvenience.

That deleted 18,249 of the 18,296(!) styles in the workbook.

holy c^&* 18000+ styles where applied????

at 5 seconds a pop, that would take over 25 hours solid (no breaks), just to apply them

Re: Remove many unwanted/duplicated styles

Shg,

That appeared to work! None of my sheets broke formatting (at least not the externally facing ones). Yes I inherited this spreadsheet from some consultant and all the styles in the background have been slowing things down. I actually don't think each of those styles was made - I think everytime he copied a tab in, it duplicated the styles. I don't understand the bug but it's basically some styles that keep getting copied everytime you deal with one particular workbook. I've never seen this issue before.

Thanks!
