My excel has these weird symbol fonts rather than the regular greek ones such as gamma, lambda etc. Can someone help me how to change these Symbol font.

Looks weird to me too! maybe someone has been playing around with fonts on your machine and renamed another font as "symbol". Coud you repair your Office installation? This might reset it.
