    Predicting text along a row

Excel automatically inserts previously used words or phrases within a column provided there is no gaps in the column.
    Can one
    1. get it to predict within the column even if there is a cell with no entry in that column?
    2. do the same thing along a row?
    3. predict words or phrases anywhere on the sheet?

    1. To the best of my knowledge, no. One potential workaround is to temporarily insert some symbol, e.g. "-", in all of those blank cells, which will then allow the predictive drop-downs. Obviously remove these entries when finished.

    2. To the best of my knowledge, no.

    3. To the best of my knowledge, no.

Thanks. I do as you suggest & put a "." in empty cells for columns but really was hoping that the same repeat facility could work along a row. I'm working on sheets with rows many hundred cells long with some rows containing just a dozen different phrases but repeated hundreds of times. It would save so much time! I wonder why Microsoft do that feature for columns but not rows....

Yes. Excel is rather biased towards a "portrait" view of data.

But then, isn't that the most sensible? Haven't tables to house data almost always been of that orientation traditionally, i.e. with the headers at the top, rather than at the left, and data of a similar type in the same column, rather than the same row?

You could try re-posting this in the VBA section to see if there's some workaround available with code.

    Regards

I agree that the portrait view is most common but sometimes the landscape view is necessary and having the option along a row needn't prevent the column facility.

Thanks for the VBA suggestion. I will try it.

    True. Can't argue with that.

    Best of luck.
