Losing decimal places in .csv file saved in Excel

    Good afternoon

I have been downloading a CSV file of simple financial data for over two years. I edit the file in Microsoft Excel for Mac and then upload to an accounts package. Since Dec the CSV file has changed its properties. Namely, it does not save to 2 decimal places (a requirement of the financial package) if either there is no pence ' .00 ' or if the final decimal place is a ' 0 '

No matter how I try I cannot get the 2 decimal places saved. I am sure from my troubleshooting that it is an Excel problem. I have tried manually creating the CSV file and using different operating systems including Windows.

If anyone can assist I would be delighted to hear from you.

Suggest you upload your file for analysis. Difficult to diagnose the patient with actually seeing him and the symptoms.

Attach a sample workbook. Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need.
    Remember to desensitize the data.

Click on GO ADVANCED and use the paperclip icon to open the upload window.

I am not familiar with Excel for Mac. The following comments apply to Excel for Windows, at least.

When Excel saves to a CSV file, data is written as they appear in cells.

If the data appears as 1234.00, 1234.00 is written to the file. To ensure that happens, format the cells with a number format and 2 decimal places, not General. Open the file in Notepad (or equivalent) to verify the form of the data as it is written.

Of course, I cannot speak to the contents of the CSV file written by a third-party (downloaded).

However, when we open the CSV file in Excel, numeric data of the form 1234.00 is entered into cells with a General format. Consequently, the ".00" will not appear. We must reformat the cells after reading the CSV file.

On the other hand, numeric data of the form $1234.00 is entered with a Currency format with 2 decimal places.

So perhaps the change is: the currency symbol has been removed.

TY for your help. Unfortunately, the nature of the online package is such that it cannot accept currency symbols, so these have never been used. I will however try to open the saved csv in another package like notepad.
