Renaming of icon for embedded document will not retain after file is saved

    Hi Five All:

Renaming of icon for embedded document will not retain after file is saved

    Maybe someone here knows:

Have embedded a MS Word document into my spreadsheet, and it is displayed as an icon.

Efforts to rename the icon from "Document" to something more definitive works, but reverts back to "Document" being displayed right after the file is saved. Thoughts on retaining the custom caption for the icon would be really neat.

(Method I'm using to change the caption are:
Right click the icon, chose document object, click on convert, change icon, and I change the caption in the handy caption field provided.)

if it's any help, the address bar at the top displays "=EMBED("Document","")" when highlighting the icon. Efforts to change that by defining a name for the object or changing the field in the quotes have come up short as well.

Many thanks for a method that retains it value.

    Pete

    Hi Pete,

The following Macro may help you change the name.
    1. Right Click on the Icon.
    2. Run the Macro (you will be prompted for a new name).

In an Ordinary Code Module Such as Module1:

Hi Lewis: many thanks for the code. Done as you suggested, get the prompt, and changed the name, and a comfirmation box appears.. The icon, however, remains unchanged.

On another note, I updated the embedded file with new data from Excel, saved the linked file to a folder, deleted and re-imbedded the file; remaned the icon. Saved the Excel file, and it appears to be keeping it's new name. Many thanks, I'll keep all posted if it regresses.

    Thanks all.

    Pete

    Your welcome Pete.

Your symptoms sound similar to an 'Active X' corruption. Next time before recreating the entire file, try the following which has saved me a lot of headaches on more than one occasion:
    a. Make a copy of the offending sheet
    b. Delete the original offending Sheet
    c. Rename the copy back to the name of the original
