    Smile Excel Formula Issue

    Trying without success to calculate average MPH for 27.81 miles in 1:56.00. Any assistance would be appreciated.

    First, I think it would be prudent to describe the time in English.

    As you wrote it (a typo?), Excel interprets that as 1 min 56 sec. But I doubt the average speed was more than 863 MPH.

    I suspect you mean 1 hr 56 min. That should be written 1:56 or 1:56:00, at least in my region. (Regional differences might apply; but I doubt it in this case.)

    If A1 is distance in miles (27.81) and B1 is time (1:56), MPH can be calculated by:

    =A1/A2/24

    A1/A2/24 is another way of writing A1/(A2*24). We multiply A2 by 24 because Excel time is stored as a fraction of a day. So 1 hr, written 1:00, is stored as 1/24.
