I am trying to search an entire column for a specific phrase (i.e. "weekend") that may be within several different cells, but is not the only text in those cells. Is there a way to format an IF command to do this kind of work?
I am trying to search an entire column for a specific phrase (i.e. "weekend") that may be within several different cells, but is not the only text in those cells. Is there a way to format an IF command to do this kind of work?
Also, if I am copying an IF formula down a column, is there a way to input a command to leave the column with its current value if it does not satisfy the requirements?
Thanks
Not knowing what column you're searching, I went with column A.
Not sure what output you're looking for:
If a number count of how many "weekend"s are found? Put this in Column B:
If a verification that "weekend"s exist in said column, Put this in Column B:Please Login or Register to view this content.

Oh! I get it. I need rep--->҉
You could use conditional formatting to highlight the cells that have the phrase that you are looking for.
Go to Conditional Formatting, New Rule, Use Formula..., and enter the following formula. (I have assumed that the data is in column A so select column A)
Formula:Please Login or Register to view this content.
Choose the formatting that you want and all cells that contain "weekend" (not the quotes) will be formatted with the formatting that you chose.

Sorry I'm not sure I clarified that well.
My column A is formatted as such: each cell begins with "weekendpost" followed by a date and time, so if it is may 10 at 715, the cell will read "weekendpostmay10715pm". I want to be able to find all the cells beginning with weekendpostmay10 and out put a corresponding number.
Hope this makes my issue a bit more clear
Enter what you want to identify in the Conditional Formatting formula that I gave you and the cells that contain that text will be formatted with the formatting that you chose.
What number...the date?out put a corresponding number.
I suggest you upload a small (clean) sample workbook (not a pic) of what you are working with, and what your expected outcome would look like.
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools

I am struggling to utilize the Conditional Formatting tool... I am in Excel 2011 and when I try to input that formula nothing seems to be happening for me.
@FDibbins I am trying to output a number for each day of the week. So Sundays would output 0s, Mondays 1s and so on
Select column A.
Click on Conditional Formatting, New Rule, Use Formula..
Enter the formula that I gave you with the text you want to find replacing the word weekend . Then click on Format and choose the formatting that you want. Click OK OK then Apply then OK.
Ok so I got to that point and I am only able to fill the cells with a specific color it seems like. Is there a way I can just highlight them and go from there? Thanks for all the help I am very close
There are tabs under Format and you can combine the formatting from the various tabs to get many different formats.
