File size

Hi

This maybe a stupid question, but what makes up a excel (xlsx) files size (mb)?
I am try to load test data for an issue i have
the forum max for this type of file is 1mb
My file is currently 2.18 mb,
i have already removed most of the non essential data
And Im left with 8 columns, with a maximum of 100 rows & 1 cell with a formula
so I was intrigued to know what data / data types increase file size

thanks
Mick

Re: File size

Formatting (also of unused cells) can be quite space consuming. Sometimes people do store some hidden sheets - of course these do count too .

A good idea could be also to copy selected content to freshly created file.
Best Regards,

Kaper

Re: File size

SAVE A BACKUP COPY FIRST. Go one row below the bottom right cell containing data. Press CTRL SHIFT DOWN-ARROW. With cursor in the selected range, right click and delete rows. Save. Close. Reopen.

Hi Mick,

I've found Objects like Shapes or Controls in a worksheet also blow up the filesize. Do you have some or lots of those?

Use Goto Special to find and/or remove these. Read about it at:

To add in to post #3, do the same with the columns

Also, check for any Conditional Formatting that might be over more ranges than you need.
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

Re: File size

Thanks Kaper, Glenn, Marvin for replying

Marvin, no there were no "Objects like Shapes or Controls" that i was aware of

Kaper / Glenn, both solutions worked, it looked to me to be the formatting on the unused cells causing the issue

Thanks
Mick

Re: File size

Ford / Glenn I figured that was what was meant / required (all empty rows & columns)

Thanks

Re: File size

That form of file bloat (extra rows and columns) causes problems most frequently. Thanks for the Rep.
