What does this symbol mean

I have been doing a workbook that has been going back and forward via email.
The laptop that I sent to has been brought to me so I can update the workbook.
The file (icon) below is for the workbook but I cannot open it.

I suspect when I send this to the recipient it is being opened online and then the link is being saved, rather than the workbook itself. (Nope doesnt appear to be that)

Update......

I edited a copy of the workbook on the laptop (office 2010) I then took a copy on a memory stick and transferred to my PC (office 2007) and get the symbol below which opens with this:

When it is copy/pasted it shows as XML required to open it although the icon states xlsx file.

Is it something I can correct?
