Text to Conditional Formatting icons in a drop down list

    Hi Peeps
I'm trying to figure out how to create a drop down list for traffic lights that replaced Green, Amber and Red with icons.

    For example.
drop down in A1 is "Green, Amber, Red"

When Green is selected, instead of A1 displaying "Green" it changes to display the ICON.JPG. Amber creates the next icon in the sequence of the Conditional Formatting icon set, as does Red.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi simon and welcome to the forum,

See the attached to see if it does what you want. In A1 is a Validation List of Green, Amber or Red. When you pick one of those 3 words a Conditional Format will turn the background that color. See it in the attached.

    Hi Marvin,
Thanks for the welcome message and the file.

This solution works well. I wonder if using the same principle if it is possible to have an icon appear instead of the background changing colour??

I have been stumped on this one for awhile now.

    Cheers
    SG

    Hi simon,

It looks like the Icon set needs to have VALUES instead of words like Green, Amber and Red. Then based on the value (which you can set) Conditional Formatting will display a red, amber or green ball icon. There might be some indirect way to get the word Green and a green ball in the same cell but it escapes me for the moment.

    Hi Marvin,
    Oh well.

Looks like I'll have to try and figure out an acceptable work around. I'll post it here if and when I find an acceptable solution.
