Conditional Formatting based on cell value

Hello, in the attached file my goal is to have three different conditional formatting rules that are applied to the top five numbers. I would like a different color background for the top five criticals, majors, minor applied to each column in the table. While I can use the built in formatting for the top five in the column easy enough, I do not know how to apply the colors based on the level column. The data changes pretty regularly so it is not feasible to do it manually.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

    Hi @ dcgrove

I'm pretty sure this is the way:

I took as example column B.
and placed in cell O3 "Minor"
then in Conditional Format / Use Formula copied the formula.
It is finding the Rank , but despite I asked to show all the cells with Rank<6 in order to get up to 5
it highlights only 3 or 4 cells
Someone reading us can help to find where I went wrong .

I cheated changing the number 6 for 13 and 14 and it highlighted the top 5
Barriers are there for those who don't want to dream

    Hi Clayton @dcgrove

    I already realized my mistake.
the correct formula for the conditional formating is:

Please Login or Register to view this content.
this example works for the second column, and "Critical" filter
I've used a small list for the conditions in Column O, but you can use the words directly in the formula.
this shows the 5 highest values in the rank... but if you have a tie in the fifth there will be more than 5 cells highlighted

Your explanation is not clear at all. You want the top 5 but only give 3 levels. How is that supposed to be applied without a definition of what each level is? Column M doesn't make any sense at all the way it stands as all levels seem to apply to a host of different values.

Re: Conditional Formatting based on cell value

    I'm just speculating here,

What I understood from Clayton's questions is:
In each column filter all the values which are, let's say, "Critical" and mark from them the top 5
then do the same filtering for "Major" and then for "Minor"
so, at the end you'll have in each column, 5 cells marked as top 5 critical, another 5 cells marked as top 5 major and 5 marked as minor
But if you have ties, then there will be more than 5 cells marked as you can see in yellow b'cause the repeated value 7, or in blue with repeated value 5
