    Hi,

I am trying to work out how to make a spreadhseet automatically calculate rates using two different data. please see the following:

In Column L I have a drop box stating new and old. So if I choose New I want a set of calculation to be done in Column M, using data from Column K and Q. Could someone please guide me on what function I need to be looking for. Your help will be much appreciated. Thanks

As you don't say the calculations you're making, let's assume that:

if "New" is selected in L4, in M4 the formula had to be:

if "Old" is selected in L4, in M4 the formula had to be:

and if nothing is selected, you left M4 empty, then you can use:

    Re: Drop Box automated calculations

In your other post you said that this is for a school project, so it wouldn't be right for us to solve the whole problem for you.

As vichopalacios has said, you need to use an IF statement to check if 'New' or 'Old' is selected, with the appropriate calculations for each option - you'll need to work out for yourself what those calculations are and how to fit them into the IF statement (hint - watch where you put your brackets if you have lots of them). His formula also sensibly deals with neither 'New' nor 'Old' being selected - this is basic 'error checking' which can make your spreadsheets look a lot cleaner.

    Good luck.

I recently started a new job so am a bit busy and may not reply quickly. Sorry - it's not personal - I will reply eventually.
If your problem is solved, please go to 'Thread Tools' above your first post and 'Mark this Thread as Solved'.
If you use commas as your decimal separator (1,23 instead of 1.23) then please replace commas with semi-colons in your formulae.
You don't need to give me rep if I helped, but a thank-you is nice.
