Question Formulas Referencing Other Workbooks Add Server Path / Location

    Hi there, Excel Masters!

I've got an odd problem regarding formulas that link to other workbooks. Almost 100% of the time, I write formulas with what I suppose are "relative" links to other files. That is, the relevant part of the formula looks like this:
    EXAMPLE A: Normal

19 out of 20 users never have an issue with links / references being set up this way.

But sometimes, on one user's computer, the formula will change to something like:
    Example B: Abnormal
Please Login or Register to view this content.
...and it includes part of the server address within the formula. When the formula includes these extra bits, the link to the other file is broken and the spreadsheet doesn't work any more. Here's the kicker:
    1. The location of the files hasn't changed; they're in the same place they always were
    2. If I open the spreadsheet in question, I don't see the extra bits containing the server address and the formulas work fine for me.

I've already checked to make sure the advanced options in Excel match up for all users. File -> Excel Options -> Advanced -> General -> Web Options -> Files ...all four boxes here are checked on all machines...

Can anyone help me figure out what's going on? Thanks!

    Hi, welcome to the forum

(those are absolute references, relative references don't have the $ - and they would adjust when copied down and/or across)

hmm if the other users (on different pc's?") don't have a problem, and the files are all still in the same folder, long shot here - is the "bad" user using the exact same file, from the exact same folder, as the other users?

Re: Formulas Referencing Other Workbooks Add Server Path / Location

    Thanks! Long-time lurker, first-time poster.

I was trying to say "relative" or "absolute" references with regard to the way the formula stores the location of the other file to be grabbing data from. In my (poor) attempt to explain things, I see it this way:
'[Labor Tracking.xlsm]Labor Hour Entry' as a "relative" reference / link and
'HN-DC/Operations/Human Resources[Labor Tracking.xlsm]Labor Hour Entry' as an "absolute" link, if that makes sense.
So in this case I'm referring to how Excel knows which other spreadsheet to pull values from.

Yes, I've confirmed that the "bad" user is connecting to the same files / same location as the rest of us.

Are they in the same workgroup as everyone else?

Yes, though the "problem" user is connected to the server via a different switch than most other users.

That might be causing the problem. It appears that the culprit has a different path to the folder than the others, so the path in the link is different

Re: Formulas Referencing Other Workbooks Add Server Path / Location

Just curious: Do you have any idea why that would affect the way Excel spreadsheets talk to one another, but not mess with shortcuts to items on the server in question? If there's an issue with the switch, it seems like Excel changing the links is the only symptom of it. It's just odd...

Like I said, it may be that being on a different switch gives them a different path in the NW, which would mean that the path to communal files would also be different - the destination is the same, but the road to get there varies

Thanks. Our IT guy is coming out on Friday so I'll try to document the issue and have him look into it. If he can verify and fix the problem, I'll post the resolution here.
