    Solver Question??

Anybody who could please explain how to answer this question?

"Open the ExcelExpert_3-4b workbook and run the Solver; increase the cost
of goods for products 4 and 5 by 10 percent and save the result as a new scenario."

ExcelExpert_3-4b workbook attached to this thread.

    Re: Solver Question??

This looks to me like a typical home work. This is according to forum rules a "no no" but hints are allowed so lets see if I could add some comments to clear the mystery.

    and run the Solver
Select data "tab" and click on "Solver" icon, since the model is set up you only have to click button marked "Solve" to run solver but, ....

First of all the values in range D6:D11 is suposed to be integers see "Subject to Constrain" where "Projected_Sales" = "Integers" but they are not, they are just numbers set with zero decimals so you nee to chang that first.

Click on "Options" button and untick box marked "Ignore Integer Constrain" then click "OK".

Back to the previous window you see a box marked "Make Unconstrained variables Non-Negative" Well as you can't make negative products, you can only make or not make a product you better tick that box as well.

Then a solver result is often very depended on the starting point, so in order to get the "best" result range D6:D11 should be cleared before you start a solver run. Close Solver and clear rang D6:D11. Doing sowill you get a "DIV!/0" error in range G6:G11.

To fix this you change the formula In G6 from "=F6/$F$12" to "=IF(F6=0,0,F6/$F$12)" and drag this formula down to G11. So now you are read to start the solver run. Click "Solver" icon and then button "Solve"

To increas a price with say 10 % it is the same as multiplying the original price with a factor of 1.1

    Re: Solver Question??

    Hi Alf,

Not homework, I'm a bit too old for homework at this stage. Its just a practice file which is in the MOS Excel expert study guide which I could not get my head around. Thanks for the help.
