Formula for Deliniating Detailed BOM Structure for Placing Data in the proper column

I have a detailed numbering BOM Structure and the output looks like:

1
1.1
1.1.1
1.1.1.1
1.1.1.1.1

I would like to use a formulae which counts the number of periods in the data and returns either 0, 1, 2, 3 ,4.

I will use this to build a excel based costed indented BOM which places the data in the proper column.

From my understanding the data to check and the result should be as follows.

1 - 0 periods
1.1 - 1 periods
1.1.1 - 2 periods
and so on.
