Red face Conditional formatting using numbers, symbols and string/text

I have cells that contain random numbers and I have a conditional formatting set up to say if a cell equals 5 for example make that cell the colour blue.
However I some times have to add for example 5 - MD or 5 + MD the letters could be any combination in the alphabet. so some cells I might have just 5 and some I might have 5 - MD and wanting to have these cells the same shade of blue.

At the moment I am just doing this manually, and the shade are not matching up.

Thanks so much for you help in advance

Try this rule (it will need to be a rule based on a formula when you set it up)

    =ISNUMBER(FIND("5",A1))

Yes just use this formula but when you set up the conditional formatting apply it to the full range you want.

    Hi,

    I tried doing this: =ISNUMBER(FIND("5",A1:L17))

is this correct as it didn't work.

Re: Conditional formatting using numbers, symbols and string/text

Great. Glad you worked it out. It will pick up anything with a 5 in it including numbers like 15, 195 etc.

Re: Conditional formatting using numbers, symbols and string/text

Hi, sorry but I am having issues again.

I am actually using this formula on a formatted spreadsheet that already has conditional formats in there, so i am going in to edit them. The spreadsheet also already has greyed out sections
    where there are no numbers.

When i try to edit existing conditional formats it does not work, also when I clear the spreadsheet form all formulas it still does not work, any ideas?

    Thanks!

Question Re: Conditional formatting using numbers, symbols and string/text

For some reason it won't let me attach, I've tried the paper clip icon and I have tried dragging it across.

Re: Conditional formatting using numbers, symbols and string/text

You've got a lot of CFs! It works ok on my machine. I edited the CF for the value 27 and I was able to get it to change colour as I put 27 into various cells. These CFs though are different to what we discussed above as they are just looking for the actual number (not the number in amongst other text). Also there are a lot of duplicate CFs for different ranges. Do you want different colours for the same number in different areas? for example you have a different colours set up for "27" in different areas
