Uber driver and Excel - layout, general questions

Uber recently started operations in my area. I joined right away and have been tracking lots of info to make sure I'm not doing this for a loss... I'm not new to Excel, but I'm just a basic user with basic needs. My difficulties anytime I create a file in Excel are how to layout the data, and also if I have errors anywhere. Sometimes errors are difficult to see.

    1) Is my layout appropriate for what I'm trying to achieve?

    2) When I create a new month, I have to recreate the days of the week to match the days of the month. If you look at Jan vs. Feb, the first day of the month is different. And then I also have to move the summary line (in yellow) to match the end of each week. Is there a way to automate this process?

    3) General cleanliness and formulas. Is anything wrong or maybe something is missing that I should have?

Thank you so much for any help you can offer.

You can generate the day of the week the same way you do month-day-year.
    Highlight the dates
    Right click
    Format
In the General tab pick date
Then pick the format with the day of the week

Now you can copy them down and you won't have to do it manually.

    Hi,

I suggest stop trying to build a fancy layout around your data.
Have a data entry sheet to capture all your raw data.
Then you a Pivot Table and/or formulas on other sheets to compile and extrapolate the running totals.

Attached is a suggested format. The Data Entry sheet is just for the raw data.
The Pivot Weeks sheet contains a Pivot Table format'ed to manage the data.
I ran out of time to complete all the formulas. It can also to setup to automatically update and grow with your data.

The same kind of Pivot Table can be created for Monthly views of your data.

The data for tracking your maintenance should be data entered similarly on a separate sheet. Then the two sets of data can be combined and compared.

If this is something you would be interested in, I would be happy to help continue to develop it.

    Hope this is helpful.

    Cheers

Re: Uber driver and Excel - layout, general questions

As I stated in the original post, I'm a basic user of Excel. Pivot tables just blew my mind. I just watched a video that I'm sure barely scratches the surface, but I am amazed at how much work can be saved.

The big help in southward's post is efficiency. I've spent so much time creating a worksheet around the data. It doesn't have to be this difficult.

Off to bed, but I'll check in again tomorrow. Thank you so much.

Southward is right, pivot tables are the best to use. I can help with that also.

Re: Uber driver and Excel - layout, general questions

I've taken the pivot table concept from southward's post, and created something similar that works with my 2002 version of Excel.

There's a sheet of totals, data entry, and weeks. And that's all. I've spent a little time adjusting all the formulas in the totals sheet that previously referenced individual month sheets. They now reference the data entry sheet where all of the important data is located.

Thanks again for the assistance and offers to help.
