    @ sign in Table Reference?

I’ve replaced a matrix with an official Excel table and rather than normal formula references, it uses the following syntax [@[Sell Date]]. I was having a problem that appears to have been resolved by removing the @ (I thought it might be how Table indicate absolute address). But after searching to confirm that assumption, I can’t find much on the purpose other than one post that said it was an Excel 10 shortcut to shorten “This row” in table references. What is the difference with or without the @ sign? I.E. [@[Sell Date]] vs. [[Sell Date]]? Am I creating a different problem I haven't realized by removing it?

Re: @ sign in Table Reference?

As that post you discovered said, the @ is to specify 'This Row'.

Let's say you have this data:
Please Login or Register to view this content.
Now add a third column Col3. In the second row, click the AutoSum button and you'll get this formula automatically:
    Formula: copy to clipboard
Please Login or Register to view this content.

This will automatically fill in down the column and give you:
Please Login or Register to view this content.
Now delete the @ from the formula to make it this:
    Formula: copy to clipboard
Please Login or Register to view this content.

Now what you'll have is this:
Please Login or Register to view this content.
As you can see, the formula is now summing all of Col1 and Col2, not just the numbers in the same row.

Does that help explain it at all?

If you want to delve into it further, these are worth looking at:

A page with lots of examples of Table references (though it can get a bit difficult to follow in places): http://peltiertech.com/structured-re...-excel-tables/

Edit: attached is a file showing the data/formulae I gave above - look at the difference between Col3 and Col4

If your problem is solved, please go to 'Thread Tools' above your first post and 'Mark this Thread as Solved'.
If you use commas as your decimal separator (1,23 instead of 1.23) then please replace commas with semi-colons in your formulae.
You don't need to give me rep if I helped, but a thank-you is nice.

Re: @ sign in Table Reference?

THANK YOU SO MUCH for the detailed explanation and the example. It makes perfect sense. There are a couple instances in my table that I need to remove the “@” sign to summarize data properly but most need it and this could have been a real problem based on the formula behavior without the ‘@’ sign. Thanks again!
