Question Need to Sort by Date & Alpha

Hi Members of this awesome Forum group,

I need assistance in sorting my excel document for mixed cell data.

I wish to sort by Date but have Date and A-Z in the same cell..

E.g. If i want the following Cell data on the left to look like the right.
Do i sort it by changing values in the custom list? (i have tryed sorting by day/month/year, or

    22/02/2017 KT 22/02/2017 KT
    20/04/2017 SA 30/03/2017 ST
    21/04/2017 SA 31/03/2017 ST
    23/05/2017 SA 20/04/2017 SA
    24/04/2017 AD 21/04/2017 SA
    26/05/2017 SA 24/04/2017 AD
    30/03/2017 ST 23/05/2017 SA
    31/03/2017 ST 26/05/2017 SA

Any help in the matte would be awesome

p.s. i'd rather not add any other columns in to assist in this sorting process.

Select the first row and make it color with any color. ( This is for justifying that shorting is correctly happen or not)

Now select the whole data then press Alt->S->S->>> in short by section select according which column you need to short the data ( If you have given header name the that same thing will shoe in short by section)->>>order you may select oldest to newest or newest to oldest as you need then ok.

Thats it, hope this will help you

Re: Need to Sort by Date & Alpha

Ok I am sorry i was thinking that Date and text both are in different cell but they are in same cell that is why it is not working.

You must do separate dates & text do follow below steps.

Select A1:A9 then press Alt-A->E Check mark delimited->>Check mark on space->>>Next->>Finish

Now select the both column A1:B9 the press Alt->S->S and do as in post #2 suggested.

Now You can simply add both cells into in one- =A1&B1

    Hope this will help.

Hi all- Ankur, I tried ALT+s, ALT+S, ALT+FUNCTION+s. Nothing happened. Could you clarify your suggestion?
OK, ALT+E brings up Office Access Menu, asking for keys from older versions of Excel. Perhaps you could explain, without using Keyboard short-cuts?

Re: Need to Sort by Date & Alpha

Ok once again let me clear every thing.

    You have data like
    Header
    22/02/2017 KT
    20/04/2017 SA
    21/04/2017 SA
    23/05/2017 SA
    24/04/2017 AD
    26/05/2017 SA
    30/03/2017 ST
    31/03/2017 ST

The dates are with text, which mean you can't short them according Day,moths & year ( because cells are not date instead of date it has also text included)
So we must extract date in one column and text into next column (B)
For separation, you can use text to column function which is in built in excel and easy to use.

Select A1:A9 then press Alt->A->E Check mark delimited->>Check mark on space->>>Next->>Finish

This will extract date into A column and text into B Column.

Now you have dates which can easily short according your need.

Now select the whole data A1:B9 then press Alt->S->S->>> in short by section select according which column you need to short the data ( If you have given header name the that same thing will shoe in short by section)->>>order you may select oldest to newest or newest to oldest as you need then ok.

Data will short and now you just need to add them into single cell.

    Drag down.

    Hope now it is clear??

    I pressed ALT + E. Here's the result:
    Untitled.png

Do you have KuTools or some other Add-In installed? Apparently ALT+E takes you to Text-to-Columns, but that's not built in to MY version of Excel 2016. I knew what you were doing, Ankur, I just thought you should clarify for the new guy.

OK, NOW it works. Hopefully @gamefreakad will be able to figure it out.
gamefreakad, If adding columns is a real problem, consider copying the problem data to a new sheet in cell A1 and down.
Split it up, sort it, paste Ankur's formula in column C to rejoin it, then copy column C and paste it AS VALUES in the original location.

Thankyou both! I've read through your methods and think I'll be able to get it once I'm back on the computer! I'll mark this as solved, once I've done so.

    Solid effort from both 👌
