I ran Document Inspector which said "Links to other files were found". However, Data-->Edit Links is grayed out. Also, I searched (i.e. ctrl+F) for brackets, and .xl and .pdf files. No results. Also no links in Name Manager. Any ideas?

Links can be a pain in the neck. They could be associated with formulas, in which case they do show up. They could be associated with named ranges - those are only slightly hidden. Or they can be associated with a conditional format. You may be trying to change the format of a cell in the current workbook based on the value of a cell in another workbook.
One spreadsheet to rule them all. One spreadsheet to find them. One spreadsheet to bring them all and at corporate, bind them.
A picture is worth a thousand words, but a sample spreadsheet is more likely to be worked on.
