Automatically creating names for multiple rows (Create from Selection)

    Hi,

the function "Create from Selection" for automatically creating names for a row is almost my solution. But unfortunately it is not possible, to link more than one row to the same name. It always asks: Replace existing definition of 'name'?

If I chose yes or no, the result is, that just one row will be assigned to the name.

    Example:

    A B
    _1500001 ABC
    _1500001 DEF
    _1500001 GHI
    _1500002 JKL
    _1500002 MNO
    _1500002 PQRS
    _1500003 TUV
    _1500003 WXY
    _1500003 JKL
    _1500003 GHI
    _1500003 PQRS

I want the Cells in Column B (Rows 1-3) to be assigned to the name "_1500001",
the Cells in Column B (Rows 4-6) to be assigned to the name "_1500002" and so on...

    without manually selecting.

Is that possible? Please let me know if I should specify this problem.

    Thanks and best, Philipp

    Hi,
another worksheet has conditional formatting rules that lookup these names (_1500001) and highlight the cell, if a specific text is contained within the range of the name.

Hi Tim, thanks for your reply.
In my case, it would be more columns than one that would be included in the name. I am just updating a spreadsheet from someone who set this up before me. Is it possible to assign multiple cells to one name automatically?

Hi pscharf. Welcome to the forum.

Your example does not reflect what you describe in your last post. So I am not clear enough about what you are asking.

It would expedite solution if you would upload a small desensitized sample Excel workbook ... (not pics or screenshots. It saves having to retype data.) Make sure it is representative of the real situation.

If you are not familiar with how to do this:

To attach a file to your post,
    • be sure to desensitize the data
    • click “Go Advanced” (next to Post Quick Reply – bottom right),
    • scroll down until you see “Manage Attachments”, click that,
    • click “Browse”.
    • select your file(s)
    • click “Upload”
    • click “Close window”
    • click “Submit Reply”

The file name will appear at the bottom of your reply.

    Thank you for your help!

Please check out the Names and Ranges.

I want to have all Information in Colums C-E for one name according to the similar named rows in column A

if that would work automatically, that would be perfect.

    Thank you for tips!

Re: Automatically creating names for multiple rows (Create from Selection)

    Hi Tim,

you find a few posts above my attached spreadsheet.

When you look at the Name Manager, you can see, how I assigned the Nameranges to different names. The problem is, that I did this manually.

Is there a solution, to create nameranges according to the names in the cells in column A?

The problem with Create Names from Selection is, that it just creates a namerange for one row and not the whole range.

How do I adjust the Code that I works on Spreadsheets which are not called "Sheet1"\
To replace "Sheet1" with the name of the spreadsheet did not work (so I helped me out with naming the target Spreadsheet temporarily "Sheet1".

Thanks again, this case is solved
