    Missing Macros, VBA Editing Question

QQ: Maybe this is a dumb question but is there anyway to trace an Excel document to see if someone has opened in on a different server? If you modify something you've saved to your personal hard-drive, there's no way you can edit it in Real-Time to the original network correct? I had a layout from an old employer that we used to share as a team but before I left I had it saved to my personal USB from our SharePoint site but I swear now that the macros were there a few weeks ago and now it seems like there locked in a private sub. Can that be possible or am I just being crazy? I don't want them to think I was trying to steal anything when all I opened it for was the formulas and layout :-O Maybe I'm just paranoid.

    Re: Trace

So Im not totally clear on what you asking, but from what I understand consider the following.

Regardless of if a file is stored on a local drive, network drive, or cloud storage like SharePoint or OneDrive when you open an office file you are opening a temp version of it (if you ever see a file with a similar name in the same folder with a ~ before it, thats the temp file). You work in this temp version and upon saving/close it writes this back to the source file locally, across the network or into the cloud.

So if you saved a copy to your USB drive, that specific copy can only be opened by someone with access to the USB drive. Its not longer associated with a network or cloud storage. The copy on the network drive or cloud storage can be modified, edited, deleted, etc and it should not have any effect at all on your copy on a USB drive. There is a caveat.

If the copy you are changing is synced to Onedrive or Sharepoint (IE its in a location that reflects the cloud storage) then all changes are synced 2 ways, from you to the cloud and from the cloud to you. Its highly unlikely you set your USB as a sync location (I dont even know if its possible to do). This relationship is setup when the Onedrive sync/app is first run or from sharepoint, and generally creates a folder on your computer called Onedrive or Sharepoint, so presuming you are not within those folders this doesnt apply to you.

The file properties will tell you when and who last modified the file. I do not think it will tell you what machine opened it. "Different server" doesn't make sense, as servers are typically used to store content, not generally accessed by an end user to work from like a desktop. So if they used a different machine one of 3 things was possible. Either they had a copy on that machine independent from yours, they accessed a copy stored someplace other than your original, or they accessed the original in the same place you got your copy from. All these scenarios have no impact on your separate, locally stored copy.

More than likely the sub was protected sometime between you last being aware of its state and you copying it to the USB drive.

    Re: Trace

Thanks for taking time to break that down Zer0Cool. Sorry I'm honestly not the most tech savy person but I understand what you're saying. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't messing with any of my old employers current documents just because I saved them. I mean I figured that is how it works but with all the programing we had attached to it that were connected to specific systems that only that employer used I wasn't 100% sure with the codes and programing in mind. Thanks for clearing that up.

Welcome to the forum! Please take a moment to re-read forum rule #1 and then amend your thread title to something that better explains your problem. Changing your thread title is not optional, which means you must change it. Thanks!

    • Use concise, accurate thread titles.
    • Your post title should describe your problem, not your anticipated solution.
    • Use terms appropriate to a Google search - poor thread titles, like Please Help, Urgent, Need Help, Formula Problem, Code Problem, and Need Advice tell us nothing.
    • Responding to a request to change your thread title by doing so is mandatory.

To change a title go to your first post, click EDIT then Go Advanced and change your title.

No help to be offered, please, until the OP complies with this request.
