Unhappy Excel won't open my file after saving a screenshot

    Hello everyone,

I'm Alex, I work for a very large company, and *surprise*, I have a huge issue with Excel.

    Let's introduce the problem :

I have a super important excel file where I add a lot of metrics from my company websites.

This excel file is located on our network servor, so I created a shortcut to access it without having to doubleclick on 19091048 folders

Today, I made a screenshot with the classic windows screenshot tool. BUT, when I saved it, I accidentally gave it the same name of my shortcut ! And as I was in a rush, I clicked on "OK" when windows asked me if I wanted to reemplace the pre-existing file (the shortcut) (even if its two totally different type of file! super strange).

When I came back on my desktop, the screenshot wasnt here, but the shortcut yes (super strange again). I double clicked on it, and excel says now that it couldnt open it because the file extension is incorrect.

I tried everything to bring my excel back to life : changing the extension, opening it with the "open and repair" option, trying with open office or other version of Office... It keeps showing the same message.

So if someone had the same problem and solved it, it could save my life

Thanks in advance everyone ! And sorry if my english isnt that good !

    Alex

If you work for a very large company, and your file is on the network - then there must be a backup of that file

If you haven't opened too many Excel files, try:

    1. Open Excel new blank workbook
    2. On the recent files list, choose the file in question.
    3. Choose "Save As..."
    4. * DO NOT click OK. Instead, copy the name from the file name textbox.
    5. Cancel the Save dialog
    6. Close Excel
    7. Open File Manager, Search
    8. Search, Entire network (if you don't know where to start)
    9. When the file is found, create a new desktop shortcut.

From what I read, you damaged your shortcut file but not the actual excel file.
You cannot recreate your shortcut file?

Maybe you can right-click on the shortcut icon and view the targetadress in the properties. If you have any luck, it might still be there partially or completely in the properties.

The last post to this thread before this morning was back in September, so whatever the issue was, I am sure it was resolved.
