    Convert Time to a Number

    Hi Hi -

I am creating an invoice that will be weekly. I have on tab 2 logged hours. Tab 1 is the actual invoice that will pull in the total hours from Tab 2. The hours are pulling in as Time (15:00). So when that multiplies against the hourly rate it gets wonky. What would be the formula to multiple Time in hours against a dollar amount - or what is the formula to convert the time (in the same cell if possible) to a number to multiple against the hourly rate.

    See attached.

    Thanks!!

    Put this in B16:

    =(HOUR(B14)+MINUTE(B14)/60)*B15

Re: Convert Time to a Number

BenMiller's works. FWIW, I probably would have done it something like this.

    1) Recognize that time values are already numbers -- they are just numbers that mean (or with the units of) "days". If you are unfamiliar with how Excel stores date and time "serial" numbers, I suggest something like this: http://www.cpearson.com/Excel/datetime.htm
    2) Since times are just numbers with units of "days", I would be inclined to do a simple "unit conversion" as part of the multiplication. Something like =CONVERT(B14,"day","hr")*B15 or =B14*24*B15.

Different approach to the same problem that illustrates a little how Excel stores date/time values.

It still comes out with the 28 versus the monetary total of $675.
