Right Click "Open A Copy" Option Gone

    Win 7 Office 2016 Version 1710

How do you restore the "Open A Copy" option to the right click menu? Its no longer in my right click menu and and pressing N also doesn't work.

It was working fine this morning. Excel didn't crash. Also noticed its gone from Word also.

    Thank you

Hi 712059. Welcome to the forum.

Have you recently installed any add ins?

'Googling' I didn't find anything specific to right click "Open copy" missing, but there are other right click anomalies associated with add ins.

I didn't download anything. Don't know if anything updated automatically. But it worked fine in the morning and then a few hours later it just disappeared.

    Standard IT helpdesk steps:

    1. Reboot the computer. If fixed great.
    2. Start Excel in Safe Mode and see if the menu appears. See link for how to start in safe mode.

    3. If step 2 fixed the issue, then likely culprit is start file or add-in. Remove one by one and check.

Reboot and shutdown didn't help. Safe Mode Excel disables the Recent list so can't even try right clicking.

Hmm, then try Office Repair from Control Panel. As last resort, clean install of latest Office.

By the way, for re-install, you did complete removal including Registry entry right?
If not, try using tools like IObit Uninstaller to completely remove program.

Other than that, I'm out of ideas. Try posting at Microsoft Tech Support forum.

I did this. Will try Registry cleaner now.

So I have to uninstall Office with IObit instead of the Control Panel instead of uninstalling with the control panel and then run IObit?

    Maybe try:
    • Open fresh Excel file
    • Go to: File - Open - Browse
    • Select any saved Excel file
    • At the bottom you should see: Tools | Open (with arrow) | Cancel
    • use arrow and select Open as Copy.

maybe if you do this once it will recall the same under right click

    try registry manual way (dangerous!)
    look at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.OpenDocumentSpreadsheet\
and check all. Maybe you'll find Open as.... and if there will be "-" in front of something like this : -{EABCECDB-CC1C-4A6F-B4E3-7F888A5ADFC8} (this is example string!!!) - remove this minus and check excel. registry editor can be open all the time.
remeber this key and what you did to restore original version. best way is create backup of registry before you start to change something.

Re: Right Click "Open A Copy" Option Gone

    I have 2 Excel folders under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, Excel.OpenDocumentSpreadsheet and Excel.OpenDocumentSpreadsheet.12

Excel.OpenDocumentSpreadsheet has 2 folders under it but neither has an OpenACopy file/folder

Excel.OpenDocumentSpreadsheet.12 has several folders under it but it also doesn't have an OpenACopy file/folder.

    I've no more idea.
You can read on MS site or MSDN site, about parameters for libraries and executable files in registry. But this is a very long way,
    have a nice day

    edit:
    or call MS Support on-line

I notice you show printscreen with Open a copy option, could you show the same without this option?
