    Hours / Time Formulas

Hello - I am trying to create an invoice where the hours add up based on the time of days. E.g. subtract # of hours between noon and 5 PM then add up totals. See attached. The numbers are coming out funky. It looks like after I hit 24 hours it turns into a day chart. How do I just convert the time/hours to a regular number so I can pull into the invoice to multiply by my rate? Appreciate the help!

    Hi degross77,

Try formatting your Total Weekly Hours and your Billable Hours as [h]:mm

That's what the format is - unless I am missing something?

    Re: Hours / Time Formulas

The format I see for these cells is h":"mm which is a time of day format. Note the brackets around the h ([h]) suggested by flyboy which designates an elapsed hours format.

Guidelines for number format codes -- including time formats: https://support.office.com/en-us/art...fab54be7f4#bm1

You indicate that, after you get these times calculated correctly, that you have additional calculations (multiply by rate) that you wish to perform. Recognize that the underlying value behind your formatted time is a fraction of a day. (review this if you are unfamiliar with how Excel stores dates/times: http://www.cpearson.com/Excel/datetime.htm ). 0.5 days * $5 per hour is not going to make a lot of sense, so you may need your additional calculations to account for the actual stored time unit rather than the displayed time unit.

I can't right now, but I may be able to later. What part of this are you having trouble with.

If you are having trouble adding a custom number format, the help file describes the procedure. Your profile says you are using Excel 2003, so the interface may be a little different, but the same basic steps should apply. Open Number format dialog -> Custom category -> enter format code in format code box.

I did not see an example of the rates you want to multiply. I would be tempted to use the CONVERT() function with the date/time serial number (https://support.office.com/en-us/art...d-666c810f9af2 ). Something like =CONVERT(D8,"day","hr")*$D$10, where I would enter an hourly rate in D10.
