Select items from an external list based on values selected (VLOOKUP?)

    Hi,

I have a spreadsheet in which I would like to select some values from a drop down list, and have the remainder of the values in that row populate automatically. I've made a couple of screenshots to illustrate.

I have the tool list (upper most screenshot), which will have all the tools I need to use, and I would like to be able to select the tool (in the lower screenshot), followed by the OD, and then have the remainder populate as per the tool list.

Please note, the 2 x "tool" in the list are the same tool, but they are different sizes. I would like to be able to select tool (and ideally only have one in the dropdown list), and have the relevant OD's appear in the dropdown list, then populate the remainder of the cells?

I would imagine I will have to use VLOOKUP for this, but some guidance would be good?

    Thanks,
    Stewart

First, have a look here: http://www.contextures.com/exceldata...sindirect.html

If that doesn't do what you want, will you please attach a sample Excel workbook? We are not able to work with or manipulate a picture of one and nobody wants to have to recreate your data from scratch.

    1. Make sure that your sample data are REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    2. Make sure that your desired results are also shown (mock up the results manually).

    3. Make sure that all confidential data is removed or replaced with dummy data first (e.g. names, addresses, E-mails, etc.).

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells as they cause lots of problems.

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment, so to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

Please pay particular attention to point 2 (above): without an idea of your intended outcomes, it is often very difficult to offer appropriate advice.

Thanks, I will have a look at the webpage provided.

In the meantime, I have attached an example sheet with my desired outcome. Hope it makes sense.

Since you already have a 'Number' field on the 'Tools' sheet you could use that as the reference for the drop down list, as modeled in the attached copy of the file, and auto fill all of the other information from that using:
    Formula: copy to clipboard
