I haven't had much experience with sharing workbooks myself, but I have created a tracking template for a particular group in my company and they work on the workbook with another group in another location in the company. This means that they "insist" on having the workbook shared so they can edit it simultaneously.

When they provide a copy of the workbook to me to extract monthly data (only 2MB file size) it takes a loooong time to open and has all these external file links to temp files on c:/username/etc

Everything I've read up on sharing seems to discourage the practice.

Can anyone sell me on the idea that sharing workbooks is a good idea and/or have done so successfully?

They are using Excel 2013.
