Sharing Workbooks

I have created a number of linked Excel workbooks which link to a remote MySql database and refresh upon opening. I then use MS Access to link to these workbooks to produce queries, reports etc. My problem is that the Excel workbooks don't like being shared so if someone is using Access it locks everyone else out. Does anyone know a way around this?
