How to shade cells - but keep cell borders

I change the colour of a row or column.
    All cell outlines are colored.
How do I change the color BUT keep the outlines of cells.
I know it's always been like this on Excel.
But surely some genius thought sometimes people might like to keep outlines?

I don't really want to change the color of outlines.
I'm happy with the dull grey color it has.

EDIT: I've just tried changing the borders of entire worksheet,
It doesn't matter what color you choose, it always makes it black.
The current version I am using is Excel 2013.

    Thanks.

    Shouldn't be a problem

    Click on Borders icon
    Choose More Borders
Select the colour (a light grey)
    Then click on Outside
    and click on Inside
    Finally, click on OK
    Done

    1. Select the range of cells you want to have borders
    2. Right click
    3. Click the down arrow at the Borders icon in the pop up tool bar
    4. Click 'More Borders'
    5. In the dialog box, click 'Color'
    6. Select the color you want for the borders
    7. In the large display of the borders location, click the ones you want to have the selected color. (the lines will change color in the display as you click them.
    8. When you have the colors selected, click OK.

    guys... thanks for both replies.
i'm now editing on office 365.
    same problem.

    i'm 100% sure i found a bug

both your instructions are fine and work

what i was doing was selecting inside and outside border first, and ONLY then choosing a colour.
if you leave choosing a colour till afterwards, then nothing happens.

    a bit unintuitive i say.

I don't think it's a bug - just, as you say, not as intuitive as it might be.

Please update your user profile, which still says Excel 2010 and is now out-of-date. Thanks.

If that takes care of your original question, please select Thread Tools from the menu link above and mark this thread as SOLVED. Thanks.

Agreed, not a bug, just not intuitive. Something you learn from experience. I suspect it's so you can choose different colour borders for each and every side.

Nobody ever accused Microsoft of being intuitive.
