    Reference isn't valid

I have 3 open workbooks from yesterday.
I keep getting the message "Reference isn't valid" whenever I click on a cell, click on Menu:File, or any of the minimize, maximize or close the workbook. I'm using Excel 2016 on Windows 10.
    Any suggestions?

The symptoms are that you have an event macro, either in the ThisWorkbook code module or a Sheet code module that is being triggered and is looking for a parent object for a property. When you get the message, click the 'Debug' button and it should show you the code that is generating the message.
Any code provided by me should be tested on a copy or a mock up of your original data before applying it to the original. Some events in VBA cannot be reversed with the undo facility in Excel. I saw no Debug button when the message appeared, but what I've done is click the undo icon and the message went away but I am unable to close either of the 2 open workbooks. IF I have WB1 active and click on a cell, WB2 becomes active, and clicking on File or the close icon in the upper right does nothing. Clicking on a cell or on another sheet also does nothing. IF I could shut WB2 down, I may be able to continue on the other workbooks. I thought their was a way thru Windows to close a program and then reopen it with the other workbooks.

You can close Excel using Task Manager.

This is getting weirder. I placed the cursor over the Excel icon in the taskbar,
the 3 workbooks appear, but when I click on the X in the red box nothing happened.
then in the offending workbook, the cursor which had been the upward left pointing
arrow changed to the block plus sign and I was able to click on a cell, enter data as normal.
Now everything seems to be working perfectly.

Probably something unique to a MAC. I haven't seen anything like it in any other postings, but that don't mean nobody else has had the problem. It just means I haven't seen it posted.
