Setting age of item-calculating submission date age

We need to track how long an application has been sitting before it has been resolved. In the attached sample, you can see that the formula ties the date of submission to 'today's date', which continues to grow with time. I'd like the timer to stop when a date is entered into the close date.

Is it possible to have age of item calculate from today if no data entered into close date and calculate from close date if that cell has been filled?
