DAY function ain't workin for me :-(

The whole internet says that we can extract the DAY number by using:

=DAY(A1)

A1 being where my date resides >>> 01-01-18

As shown at this link in the "Extract the day" section:

But for me I try it, and it doesn't work

01-01-18 isn't a date. It's text that looks a bit like a date. Change the format of the cell to General. If it becomes a 5 digit number, it's a date. If it doesn't, it isn’t. Change the dashes ( - ) to slashes ( / ) and try again.
