    Question Creating a Scoring System

I am working to make a new spreadsheet to use to calculate dance competition results. I have no idea where to start to make this as simple and efficient as possible.

We have approximately 22 team categories with multiple age divisions (Tiny Tot, Pee Wee, Elementary, Junior, Senior, Young Adult, and Adult). I need to be able to input scores from 5 judges, toss out the high and low judge of each dance, and average the remaining three to calculate the score for each routine.

Then I need to be able to match the Team Name and entry number with the team scores to rank them 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for each age division of each category. The final task would be to list the top 3 high scores from each category across all the age divisions.

Does this make any sense???? Right now the spreadsheet is very tedious and doesn't calculate any of the results automatically. I have to do all of this myself.

Is it possible to pull the results from multiple categories together into one place to calculate an OVERALL ranking of all scores for the entire competition?

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Please upload your workbook (even if incomplete and not fully developed) which shows the sort of data you have. It is always easier to advise if we can see your request in its context.

Show a before and after situation with manually calculated results, explaining which information is data and which is results, and if it's not blindingly obvious how you have arrived at your results some explanatory notes as well.

To upload a file click the Go Advanced button at the foot of your post, look underneath the post area for the Manage Attachments section and take it from there.

When I click the attachments button, a blank white bar appears and won't let me do anything.... Is there another way I can submit my sample?

Are you following the instruction in my last sentence in #2 or clicking the paperclip icon?

The first tab is what I was just working on for one category. There are about 20 different team categories that will need something similar, or an easier format/way to tabulate and pull scores into one place to print results sheets.

The second tab is a sample of what the old system looks like. It takes forever to do it this way because I'm not sure how to pull the information needed for placements into a separate place (ie: table or separate tab for results) for easy reading and printing.

Please note what was asked in post #2.

We need to not only understand which information is raw data and which are results, but also how you use the workbook.

    Re: Creating a Scoring System

It is used to calculate 1st, 2nd, and third place for each age division in every category

The scores are also used to find the following:
-highest overall score in each category
-highest score across all categories for each age division (i.e. highest score out of all Pee Wee categories, highest score out of all elementary categories, junior categories, and so on
-then the OVERALL Awards are calculated by ranking the top 3 highest scoring routines out of all tiny tot, Pee Wee, elementary, and junior dances and a separate ranking for the top 3 highest scoring routines out of all senior, young adult, and adult categories

    Re: Creating a Scoring System

Attached is a start. I've changed the "Sample" Tab so it's a table. I changed the "Rank" column formula so it's dynamic and will rank all the ones
with the same Division name no matter where they are in the list. I also changed the Overall Ranking column so the formula makes use of the table.
I added a helper column on the end (which I would hide). This makes the "Summary" page easier (I added the Summary "Tab" to show the final
results. I've run out of time for today to continue. Hopefully this helps.

    Hi

Have you tried a pivot table?

I do not know if helps you but see the pivot table based on Table 1.

    Re: Creating a Scoring System

This is a great start! Thank You. Can you recommend somewhere online to check out to learn how to do this? I've tried and tried to figure out how to set up and use a pivot table but couldn't ever get it to come out correctly....

The Team Tab is the condensed version of the sample page without so many columns. Will that make it easier? It makes way less columns to view/hide.

You can learn Pivot Tables starting with a short video and searching the internet for more options to work with.

An example, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qu-AK0Hv0b4 is a 6 minutes YouTube video.
