Unhappy Drag vertically using horizontal cell reference

    Hi there,

I am currently struggling with this issue.

I wanna drag my formula vertically but using the horizontal cell reference.

My formula is: =(O3-O2)/O2 and I would like to drag the formula vertically using the formula =(O4-O3)/O3 for the next column

    Can anyone help?

Re: Drag vertically using horizontal cell reference

    Hi and welcome
Dragging vertically will change O3 to O4, etc.. as required
Where is the horizontal reference? Do you mean O3 should become P3,... ?

Re: Drag vertically using horizontal cell reference

So basically I have dragged down my formula from 2002 till 2006 for the first column, but for the next column "Coast" I would like to use the formula =(O$9-$O8)/$O8, but when dragging it from one column to the other it becomes =(P3-P2)/P2

    Hope this helps

Hello JohnIv. and Welcome to Excel Forum.
Attempting to look at the attachment in post #3 results in the message: "Invalid Attachment specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator".
I can not understand what is being attempted. Dragging =(O$9-$O8)/$O8 down a row would result in =(O$9-$O9)/$O9. Dragging =(O$9-$O8)/$O8 over a column would result in =(P$9-$O8)/$O8. Neither would result in =(P3-P2)/P2
It may help if you upload a sample spreadsheet by clicking on the GO ADVANCED below the Quick Reply window and then scrolling down to Manage Attachments to open the upload window. Note that the paperclip icon for this site does not work. Please be sure to manually include a few of the results that you want, so that we can attempt to replicate them using formulas or VBA code.

Re: Drag vertically using horizontal cell reference

Like the other posters, I'm not sure what you're trying to do. Are you wanting to drag a formula across columns and have the formula increment the row of the reference cells as you go? In other words, if you have =(O3-O2)/O2 in the first column, you want to drag right and get =(O4-O3)/O3 then =(O5-O4)/O4 and so on?

If that is correct, then try this where you have your first formula:
    Formula: copy to clipboard
Please Login or Register to view this content.

    then drag right.

If that isn't your issue, then we really need to see a sample file, showing where you want the formula to refer to as you drag it (down and/or across) and what results you want as you drag it.
As JeteMc noted above, the paperclip icon doesn't work at the moment.
To attach a file to your post:
click Go Advanced (under the reply box),
scroll down until you see Manage Attachments,
    click that and select Browse,
select your file and click Open,
    click Upload,
(you will see your attachment appear above the Attachment Key)
    click Close this window,
    click Submit reply.
After that you should see the attachment in your post.

If your problem is solved, please go to 'Thread Tools' above your first post and 'Mark this Thread as Solved'.
If you use commas as your decimal separator (1,23 instead of 1.23) then please replace commas with semi-colons in your formulae.
You don't need to give me rep if I helped, but a thank-you is nice.
