Splitting a Population into Two Studies

    Hi all,

I have what may be a bit of a tall order issue, and not sure whether it goes beyond the scope of this thread, but thought I would give it a shot.

I am working on a project that requires me to divide a population into 2 studies (Study 1 and Study 2).

I can directly split up the population evenly, however, the issue I'm running into is that the population also has to be split by demographic variables with no overlap between the two studies.

So for example, I have a sample data set of 972 cases, and the demographics I have for each case are:
    - Gender

    - Race

    - Region

    - Education Level

    - Age Group

I'm looking for a way to split up the population so that half of the Females (of which there are a total of 489) fall into one Study and half of the Males (of which there are a total of 483) fall into Study 2.

Since 483 and 489 don't divide evenly, I would be okay with saying APPROXIMATELY half of the Females (244) are placed into Study 1 and the other (approximately) half (242), would fall into Study 2.

Then, approximately half of the Males (244) would fall under Study 1, and the other (approximately) half (242) would fall into Study 2

The other tricky part is that none of the 244 or 242 Females/Males in Study 1 can comprise the 245 in Study 2 (So if Respondent 1 is in Study 1, they cannot show up in Study 2 as part of THOSE respondents).

This rule would then half to be applied to the other demographic variables.

Essentially, I'm looking for a way to split my sample up even-ishly between studies and between demographic variables.

I've added a blank "Desired Result" column as a placeholder that I'm imagining would be populated with "Study 1"/"Study 2" labels.

I've attached a workbook to help orient the issue a little more clearly (hopefully), but any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Does this work?

    G3
    =MOD(COUNTIFS(B$3:B3,B3)-1,2)+1
