I was wondering if I could use Solver to help me rearrange a schedule after it is manually filled out? My issue is how complicated the schedule is going to be. The situation simplified is basically:
- There are 6 different "mixing" machines that produce a "bulk" material in batches, usually taking around 6-8 hours
- There are 4 different filling machines that put these bulks into different packaging
- All 6 of the mixers can feed any of the 4 fillers
- The optimal condition would be for the fillers to be continuously running, which means all of the mixers need to scheduled in a way that they will be able to feed the fillers to do so
- Depending on the products being made (duration times are pulled using INDEX and MATCH from another sheet) fill and make times vary
I was thinking of creating a column to determine the amount of down time for the fillers, sum this up at the bottom, and have solver minimize the amount of downtime. However, I don't know what variables I would let it change, and whether solver can indicate to the user how they need to rearrange the schedule.
