I am importing data from my on-line bank account and Excel is treating numbers as text.

I am running an older version of Excel (Excel:Mac2008). Every year at tax time, I import data from my on-line bank account to create an Income Statement for my accountant. I simply cut and paste from on-line account into Excel. Normally, I have no issues. This year, however, Excel seems to be treating the imported numbers as text. I cannot use any calculations as it does not appear to be a number according to Excel. I have tried to change the format on the column of numbers but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure about your version with a MAC, but when you select one of those cells, it should show you a yellow diamond with an exclamation mark in the middle. If you click on it, it should give you an option to "Convert to Number". Click on that and you should be OK. (you can select all of them at once and do the same thing).

Often, when you import (or copy/paste like you did) excel converts numbers to text. Formatting will not change that, as Formatting is a cosmetic change only, it has no affect on the underlying cell contents.

There are a few ways around this problem, a good 1 of which was suggested above.
Another way would be to incorporate a function into your formulas to do the conversion for you, but how you do that will depend on what formula or function you are using - we would need to see some examples.
    1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

One alternative option I use frequently is the Paste Special - Multiply method. What you do is put the number 1 anywhere in your workbook and copy the cell; then highlight all your 'text' numbers, go up to Paste Special > multiply. You are basically multiplying all of your text numbers by 1. This should turn them all to Number format.

There are always multiple ways to do something, when it doubt, drink a beer.

I do not care if you rep or not but please mark post as Solved if there is resolution so I stop going back and checking if anything else is needed.
