How to graphically customize a chronology? (Like "Format Chart Area")

Hello,

I want to use a chronology but I found out we do not have the ability to open "Format Chart Area" like with any chart.
The customization is very limited, I would like to get rid of many things from the chronology.
Removing the background would be a start, add some transparency etc...

If we cannot customize it, what are my options to make a nice "slicer" like the chronology?
I want to avoid having Year + Months, I definitely want a chronology like this, but maybe VBA, or from another source?

Please help me
