Excel won't allow me insert a specific string of letters/numbers without converting it

    Hi,

So I deal with with sets of data where ease case creates a new case ID, this is a string of letters and numbers, for example, "0DH7EC".

It has gotten to the point where the generating case ID begins with 0E, for example, "0E0243".

When putting this into excel it changes the text to 0.00E+00, this ruins my reporting as this case ID is important. If I then try to change the formatting on the cells it then defaults it to 0 making it useless.

If there any way to paste in the data without it being converted to this scientific formatting?

    Thank you.

    Where are you pasting from?

I'm pasting from a bespoke piece of software that generates the case ID, it isn't from another spreadsheet or office program, and I cannot change the way in which the ID is generated.

Can you export from the software instead of copying and pasting? If so, to what formats?

So it's an old legacy system and will only let me export the data as an .xml file

And also it seems like these files don't appear on my system after being exported.

Perhaps preformat the cells as Text, then paste the IDs into the formula bar, rather than the cell itself?

So unfortunately I have 1000 of these cases everyday so doing this manually wouldn't really be an option

Or you can copy and paste to a .txt file (copy into Notepad and save as .txt), then use Data > from Text/CSV.

Not here! I tested it before suggesting it.

    Excel 2016 (Windows) 32 bit

    Column1
    2
    0E0243
    3

Re: Excel won't allow me insert a specific string of letters/numbers without converting it

So it it defaulted to the 0.00E+00 when I import from the .txt file, not sure why it's not working for me

So are you importing it correctly? You have Excel 2016, which works in the same way as my 365.

    Explain the steps you took.

Attach your .txt file for checking, please.

Re: Excel won't allow me insert a specific string of letters/numbers without converting it

    So I've been going:

Data > From Text, then importing as text.

The example file that you attached worked fine for me, but when I try to do the exact same with my data, it is converting to the previously mentioned 00.0E+00.

As it's worked related data unfortunately I cannot share the .txt file.

Re: Excel won't allow me insert a specific string of letters/numbers without converting it

My mistake, I didn't specify the correct column as text, I think this has worked for me now.

Thanks very much for helping me out

Yes, you can share the .txt file - just include a few of these data items in it (five will suffice). Remove anything sensitive.
