Lightbulb How come there are macros in my spreadsheet?

    Hi there,

At work we have a shared spreadsheet with tons of macros in it. I have a separate worksheet that I use to keep track of my projects, and for some reason, after opening the shared work spreadsheet today, my personal spreadsheet now has those macros in it as well? I only noticed because I tried to Ctrl + S to save, and instead of saving it asked me to debug something. This is not a macro-enabled workbook either. It seems they have ?transfered? from the shared workbook.

Any ideas on how to get rid of this? If I delete all of the macros from my personal workbook will it also delete the macros from the shared workbook?

What format is your personal workbook? If it's an .xlsx format file, it does not have macros in it.

It is indeed an .xlsx, and that's what I'm saying; It shouldn't have them right? But when I open the macros under the development tab, there they are. Like 30 of them. I can't even save my project because Ctrl + S is a shortcut for a macro in that list. The macros don't work, but they are there.

Unless they are appearing as part of the workbook project for your personal workbook, they are not in that workbook. Macros don't spontaneously propagate from one workbook to another (unless they are viruses, and even then that couldn't happen without you changing your macro security).

I understand what you're saying and I'm not sure how it's possible, but I am 100% certain that I cannot save my personal spreadsheet because it is trying to run a macro that I did NOT enter into it. It's just there. I hit Ctrl + S, and the debugger prompt pops up to fix the macro. I open that, and there's the macro. But this macro exists only in another shared file. It's like they've somehow been linked. I just want to get to rid of them so I can save my project

Does the same thing happen if you simply click the Save button on the toolbar? If so, is the other workbook open at the same time?

Wow, for some reason I hadn't thought of using the save button. Man I'm dumb sometimes. The save button works as does File > Save.

The other workbook is open, yes. We usually always have it open while were working to see if it gets updated, but I do close it when I'm not using it.

If you have the other workbook open, then any shortcut keys assigned to its macros will trigger those macros, regardless of which workbook you have active. It doesn't mean that the macros are in your workbook though.

Ohhhh okay well that settles it then. How come I can still SEE those macros in my workbook though? Why does Excel do that! lol Had me freaking out
