Question Conditional formatting: cell changes colour based on another cell's value

I realise this is probably very simple but I just cannot seem to work it out (I've clicked through enough search results on Google to have become exasperated!).

All I want is for cells to change colour based on a "home" cell's value.

So, for example if A1's value is 0 (or 1 or 2 or 3) and B1, C1 and E1 also have that value, they turn, for instance, green. If they do not, they remain whichever colour they were originally. That's it.

Now, I can't pretend to be anything but a beginner with Excel and usually work things out through improvisation - however, I have tried several different approaches and nothing has worked. Sometimes the cell has turned colour but not because it was the same value; sometimes there has been no change at all, as if the formula itself does not exist.

Any help would be massively appreciated. For my sanity, if not my Excel development!

Re: Conditional formatting: cell changes colour based on another cell's value

    if A1's value is 0 (or 1 or 2 or 3) and B1, C1 and E1
Does the range of values matter ? so any value so long as they all are equal

    Then for Green
    for 2007, 2010 , 2013 or 2016 excel version
    Conditional Formatting

    Highlight applicable range >>

    Column A to E

Home Tab >> Styles >> Conditional Formatting
New Rule >> Use a formula to determine which cells to format
Edit the Rule Description: Format values where this formula is true:

    =AND($A1<>"",$A1=$B1,$B1=$C1,$C1=$E1)

    FormatÖ [Number, Font, Border, Fill]
choose the format you would like to apply when the condition is true
    OK >> OK

Re: Conditional formatting: cell changes colour based on another cell's value

Thank you for the prompt reply, Wayne!

I've attempted to input the formula but nothing has happened. It is doubtlessly due to my explanation!

Basically, on the left hand side would be the actual score and the guesses of my friends would be to the right. So, in this case, E12 is Team 1's goals and M5/M13 would be the guesses for those two "players". If their guess is the same as the score (E12), I want it to turn green.

I have probably done something in my own inputting of the formula but I just wanted to include this in case the issue I am having is based on the initial explanation!

    Welcome to the forum.

There are instructions at the top of the page explaining how to attach your sample workbook.

Re: Conditional formatting: cell changes colour based on another cell's value

No need to apologise - it's my lack of clarity! Just appreciate the help, Wayne.

I've attached a new sample workbook.

    E12 linked to M5, M13, M21, T5, T13, T21, AA5, AA13, AA21 (Team 1's goals).
    G12 linked to O5, O13, O21, V5, V13, V21, AC5, AC13, AC21 (Team 2's goals).

    And so on.

If Team 1 score 1 goal and the player has guessed 1 goal, it would turn green as the value is the same. If Team 2 then score again, the green would disappear as the value is different (their prediction is now wrong).

    Does that make sense?

Re: Conditional formatting: cell changes colour based on another cell's value

For some reason, when I inputted the formula myself it would not let me, asking me to put an apostrophe before the "=". HOWEVER, I copied your formula over directly and it worked. SUCCESS!

    Thanks, everyone!
