    Identifying Combinations

    Hello,

I am working with a data set that has names in separate columns. I am trying to identify the existing combinations and name them. I am trying to identify the combinations so I can put the information into a table. I will list an example below and attach a example file as well.

    Mike - Tom (Combination A)
    Tom - Mike (Combination A)

    Bob - Tom (Combination B)
    Tom - Bob (Combination B)

    Mike - Bob (Combination C)
    Bob - Mike (Combination C)

    Mike - Mike (Combination D)

Thanks. Looking at this, there are trailing spaces after some of the names in the coloured cells - you'll need to get rid of these.

Ok I can remove those. Is this possible without VBA?

    Re: Identifying Combinations

Mike, I don't think its possible to avoid VBA unless you want to do manual interventions.

You can simply put the two cells in alphabetical order to create a single concatenated name so that the ordering doesnt matter in the two cells plus trim to remove your tail spaces. You can create a list to do a vlookup against (or similar) to pull back the combinationID (and for it to highlight if there is a new one) but I cannot see how to create the combinationID without VBA as you'd be dynamically increasing a sequence each time a new combination is added.

Someone much better than me may come along and show a better way to do it but the attached would do as above and light the cases that are new that need the combination added to the bottom of the lookup table and a new code assigned.

If you know all the names then you could create a cross tab with every possible combination and then avoid the issue of expanding it but create the issue of potentially having codes you never use.
